Ministries

As part of our 'Ministries Programs', there are often Missions completed by our church and community members. Below is our most recent mission.

Mission to New Orleans

In January 2010 during the week of Martin Luther King holiday, ten members of Nelson Memorial UMC, a friend from Oak Grove, and a couple from the First Baptist church traveled to New Orleans to work on two houses that were damaged by hurricane Katrina. Work completed included sheet rocking, painting, replacing a bathtub, building a pantry, installing kitchen cabinets, and removing yard debris.
One the way to New Orleans, our bus broke down. Thanks to the efforts of Mark and Mike, repairs were made and we were able to drive it back to Boonville at the end of the week.

We stayed at the Trinity Center which was an abandoned Methodist church building that was severely damaged by Katrina. Beds were comfortable, showers were hot and the kitchen was great.

Our week began by attending the Franklin Avenue Baptist Church where we heard an amazing sermon by the new youth pastor.

Each day we began with breakfast and a short devotion. We packed our own sack lunches and traveled to the work site. After working hard all day, we traveled back to the Trinity Center, showered, ate supper, played games and hung out, and ended the day doing a devotion series “To be a Servant of Jesus”.

Bob, Sharon and Bill prepared our meals – they were awesome! During our week, we did take time to have some fun sightseeing in New Orleans. We ate at Mulate’s, drank coffee and ate beignets at Café Du Monde, and walked around the French Quarter and French Market. This is an amazing city!
